CHALLENGES TO SOLVE
The primary challenge was translating Bassman’s nuanced and abstract visual language into a new medium without losing the elegance, emotion, or movement found in her photography.
RESEARCH & DISCOVERY
I studied Bassman’s photography, interviews, and design influence in both fashion and editorial spaces. Her high-contrast compositions and dramatic use of negative analog tools on her designs were key takeaways in understanding her style.
// THE SOLUTION //
DESIGN DECISIONS
• Used a structured modular grid to create a clear flow of information
• Chose a non-serif typeface with delicate contrast to reflect modern editorial style
• Limited palette to four colors: black, a pale blush, soft gray, and cream
• Used manual tools in photoshop to mask main image
• Integrated white space intentionally for balance and breathing room
• Designed with typographic hierarchy for clarity and movement
• Ensured visual rhythm through repetition and scale variation
• Delivered as a professional print-ready PDF and mockup for portfolio presentation
The final design captures the emotional depth and stylistic sophistication of Lillian Bassman’s legacy through clean layout, expressive illustration, and strategic use of type and space. It functions as both a teaching tool and a visual tribute, and offers clarity without sacrificing mood.
